A 3-photo month on 7 AI staging plans: cost per used photo

In a slow month, an AI staging plan costs its full fee divided by the photos you used. Dated per-photo math and reset rules for 7 plans, October 2026.

Disclosure: Machineworthy is owned by the maker of QuickStage, one of the tools covered in this post.

In a 3-photo month, a staging subscription costs you the whole monthly fee divided by three, because none of the seven entry plans compared here advertises rollover of unused credits on month-to-month billing. As of October 2026, that works out to between $6.33 and $11.67 per used photo on the entry monthly plans of seven AI staging tools, against $1.00 per photo on QuickStage's pay-as-you-go option, where credits don't expire. Plans only start to win once you stage roughly 19 or more photos a month.

The advertised per-photo price on a plan assumes you use every credit. A quiet month breaks that assumption, and the reset rule decides whether the leftover credits are a saving for next month or money you already lost. This post does the division for a slow month, tool by tool, using only prices and terms from each vendor's own pages, checked October 19 or 20, 2026.

How we did the math

One rule runs through every number below. Machineworthy calls it the used-photo divisor:

Cost per used photo = what you paid for the month ÷ photos you actually staged that month.

The advertised rate divides by the plan's full allowance. The used-photo divisor divides by what you really used. In a busy month the two match. In a quiet month they can be 20 or 40 times apart.

The ground rules for this comparison:

  1. A quiet month means 3 staged photos. That is a for-example number, one small listing's worth of empty rooms. Swap in your own count.
  2. Entry plans only. Each tool's cheapest plan that includes staging, at its month-to-month price and at its annual price expressed per month.
  3. Reset or rollover comes from the vendor's own page. If the page we checked doesn't say what happens to unused credits on a given plan, the table says "not stated on the pricing page" instead of guessing.
  4. One photo, one credit. Where a tool counts credits rather than photos, we assume one credit per staged photo at base settings. Re-dos, higher resolutions and extra features can cost more credits, but in a quiet month that rarely changes the bill, because you have credits to spare.
  5. No rounding in anyone's favor. The table shows three decimal places; the prose rounds to the nearest cent.

What a 3-photo month costs on each entry plan

Prices as of October 2026. "Monthly" is month-to-month billing. "Annual" is the yearly charge divided by 12, which you pay up front whether or not the year is busy.

Tool and entry plan Monthly fee Allowance Advertised rate (full use) 3-photo month, monthly billing 3-photo month, annual billing What happens to unused credits
Virtual Staging AI, Basic $25 6 photos/mo $4.167 $8.333 $5.333 ($192/yr) No rollover on monthly or annual plans (FAQ)
Collov AI, Standard $27 60 credits/mo $0.450 $9.000 $6.333 ($228/yr) "Photo usage resets each month"
BrightShot, Basic $19 80 credits/mo $0.238 $6.333 $4.750 ($171/yr) No rollover; count resets each billing cycle
RoomStaging, Basic $19 100 credits/mo $0.190 $6.333 $4.000 ($144/yr) Expire at the end of each billing cycle
AI HomeDesign, Pro $35 30 photos/mo $1.167 $11.667 $6.333 ($228/yr) Monthly Pro: rollover not listed. Yearly plans: "Unused Credits Rollover" listed
Edensign, Starter $29 15 photos/mo $1.933 $9.667 see note ($240/yr for 180 photos/yr) Plan rule not stated on the pricing page
QuickStage, Basic $19.99 75 photos/mo $0.267 $6.663 $5.528 ($199/yr) Plan credits reset monthly
QuickStage, pay-as-you-go none buy 1 to 50 at a time $1.000 $3.000 total, $1.000 each not applicable Pay-as-you-go credits don't expire

The month-to-month column is the honest one for a slow stretch, since it's the only way to stop paying when work dries up. On those terms the ranking for a 3-photo month is:

  1. QuickStage pay-as-you-go: $1.00 per photo ($3.00 total)
  2. BrightShot Basic and RoomStaging Basic: $6.33 per photo ($19.00 total)
  3. QuickStage Basic: $6.66 per photo ($19.99 total)
  4. Virtual Staging AI Basic: $8.33 per photo ($25.00 total)
  5. Collov AI Standard: $9.00 per photo ($27.00 total)
  6. Edensign Starter: $9.67 per photo ($29.00 total)
  7. AI HomeDesign Pro: $11.67 per photo ($35.00 total)

Two plain facts from that list. BrightShot and RoomStaging's entry plans cost 99 cents a month less than QuickStage's Basic plan, so in a quiet month they come out cheaper per used photo than QuickStage Basic. And on annual billing, RoomStaging ($4.00), BrightShot ($4.75) and Virtual Staging AI ($5.33) all come in under QuickStage Basic's annual figure ($5.53). If you are certain you want a subscription and certain your volume stays tiny, those are the lower monthly fees. Even the lowest of them, $4.00, is four times the price of the same photo at a dollar each.

Which tools reset, and which roll credits over?

The reset rule is what turns a slow month from "cheaper next month" into "gone". Here is what each vendor's page says, in its own terms.

Virtual Staging AI. Its FAQ says unused photo credits do not roll over, on monthly or annual plans. The same FAQ says a yearly plan is a full-year commitment, so you can't cancel two months in. Our pricing notes for this tool are marked partial: the four visible plans above were confirmed on October 19, 2026, but a larger enterprise option seen in September was not visible on the re-check, so we don't quote it.

Collov AI. The pricing page says "Photo usage resets each month," so unused credits do not roll over. Its FAQ says regenerations of an uploaded photo are free, which helps if a first result misses.

BrightShot. Unused credits don't roll over, and the generation count resets each billing cycle. The pricing page counts credits; BrightShot's own blog equates one credit to roughly one staged image. Note that the headline "$14 a month" is the annual rate; month-to-month Basic is $19.

RoomStaging. Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle. Base-resolution staging uses one credit, but the pricing page says downloading in 2K costs 3 credits and 4K costs 5. In a quiet month that doesn't add dollars, since you have 97 spare credits, but it matters if you compare full-month rates.

AI HomeDesign. This is the one tool here where the answer depends on how you pay. The yearly plan cards list "Unused Credits Rollover" on every tier. The monthly cards list it only on Enterprise, so the $35 monthly Pro plan doesn't advertise rollover. Our notes don't record a cap or time limit on yearly rollover, so we can't tell you how long carried credits last.

Edensign. The pricing page we checked does not state what happens to unused Starter credits at the end of a month. It does sell a Pay Per Use option at $2.00 per photo, and those credits expire after one month. The annual Starter plan is priced as $240 a year for 180 photos a year rather than a monthly allowance, so how a quiet month affects it depends on whether that yearly pool carries across months, which the page doesn't spell out.

QuickStage. Plan credits reset monthly, the same as most tools above. Pay-as-you-go credits, bought one to 50 at a time at $1 each, don't expire. That second rule is the reason a slow month costs nothing extra on QuickStage: you never hold credits that can lapse.

Does annual billing or rollover fix a quiet month?

Partly, and only if your quiet months are rare.

Annual billing lowers the monthly fee, which lowers the per-photo cost in the table. It also locks you in for the full year. A 3-photo month on an annual plan is still a month where most of what you prepaid goes unused; you have simply paid for it in advance. Virtual Staging AI's FAQ is explicit that a yearly plan can't be cancelled partway through.

Rollover is the real fix, because unused credits stay yours. AI HomeDesign's yearly plans list it. For example, if you stage 3 photos in October and 50 in November on a plan with working rollover, October's spare credits can cover part of November instead of disappearing. Without rollover, every quiet month is paid in full and then wiped.

The catch with rollover plans is that you still pay the fee every month, busy or not. Rollover protects credits you already bought; it doesn't stop the next charge. So the per-photo cost of a rollover plan over a year is the yearly fee divided by every photo you stage that year. If your whole year is quiet, that number stays high.

Where's the break-even between a plan and a dollar a photo?

Divide the monthly fee by $1. That gives the number of photos you need to stage in a month before the plan costs less per photo than paying a dollar a photo on QuickStage.

Plan Monthly fee Photos per month needed to beat $1 each
BrightShot Basic, RoomStaging Basic $19 19
QuickStage Basic $19.99 20
Virtual Staging AI Basic $25 25 (allowance is only 6, so it never gets there on Basic)
Collov AI Standard $27 27
Edensign Starter $29 29 (allowance is only 15, so it never gets there on Starter)
AI HomeDesign Pro $35 35 (allowance is only 30, so it never gets there on monthly Pro)
RoomStaging Basic, billed annually $12 12

Three of the seven entry plans can't beat a dollar a photo in any month, because their allowance is smaller than the break-even count. For the rest, a quiet month sits well below the line. The plan only pays off in the months you actually use it heavily.

A simple test for your own numbers: look at your last six months. Count how many of them had fewer staged photos than the plan's break-even. If it's more than half, pay per photo and buy a plan later if volume picks up.

When a subscription is the better buy

Plans win at volume, and QuickStage's own ladder shows how much. The Agency plan is $199.99 a month for 1,500 photos, which is $0.133 per photo if you use them all, and $0.111 per photo on the annual Agency plan at $1,999 billed yearly. Basic works out to $0.267 per photo at full use. Every QuickStage plan includes QuickFix re-dos (7 a month on Basic), so a miss doesn't have to cost a new credit.

If you stage steadily, say 20 or more photos every month without gaps, a plan beats pay-as-you-go on every tool in this table that can reach its break-even. Pick the plan sized to your quiet months, not your best month, because the reset punishes oversizing. Moving up a tier in a busy month costs less than paying for a tier you only fill twice a year.

Price is one input. Before you commit to any plan, run the same few photos through the free trial and check whether the result is listing-ready: walls, floors, windows and paint unchanged, nothing added that the room doesn't have. QuickStage is built to keep walls, floors, windows and paint colors exactly as photographed, to add only movable furniture and decor, and to keep doors and walkways clear, with top-quality, photorealistic results in about 30 seconds. Label every virtually staged photo in the listing, whichever tool made it.

Bottom line

For an agent whose volume comes in bursts, the reset rule matters more than the advertised rate. In a 3-photo month, every entry subscription in this comparison costs between $6.33 and $11.67 per used photo on month-to-month billing, because none of them advertises rollover on month-to-month billing. Pay-as-you-go at $1 a photo with credits that don't expire costs $1.00 per photo in that same month, and nothing in the month you stage zero. Switch to a plan when your slow months reliably clear the break-even, roughly 19 to 20 photos for most entry plans here, and size it to the slow months.

Stage three photos free on QuickStage, no account or card, then pay a dollar only for the ones you use.

Frequently asked questions

Do unused virtual staging credits roll over to the next month?

On most entry plans, no. As of October 2026, Virtual Staging AI, Collov AI, BrightShot and RoomStaging all say unused credits reset or expire each billing cycle; AI HomeDesign lists rollover on its yearly plans only, and QuickStage plan credits reset monthly while its pay-as-you-go credits don't expire.

How much does an AI staging subscription cost per photo if I only use 3 photos a month?

Divide the monthly fee by 3. On the entry month-to-month plans compared here, as of October 2026, that is $6.33 to $11.67 per used photo, against $1.00 per photo on QuickStage's pay-as-you-go option.

How many photos a month do I need before a staging plan beats $1 per photo?

Divide the plan's monthly fee by $1. A $19 plan needs 19 staged photos a month and QuickStage's $19.99 Basic plan needs 20; plans whose allowance is smaller than that number never get there.

Does annual billing make a slow month cheaper?

It lowers the monthly fee, so the per-photo cost drops, but you prepay the year and most tools still reset unused credits monthly. Virtual Staging AI's FAQ also says a yearly plan can't be cancelled partway through.

Which AI staging plan is cheapest in a quiet month?

As of October 2026, BrightShot Basic and RoomStaging Basic have the lowest month-to-month fee here at $19, or $6.33 per photo in a 3-photo month. Paying $1 a photo on QuickStage with credits that don't expire costs less in any month under 19 photos.
